Over on the MMRC Facebook group a member posted their diopter goggle solution and I thought i'd post something on mine.
Essentially I got the Fatshark dom v2's some time ago, and the diopter set, but lo and behold an old pair of glasses recently broke, and the lenses were a perfect fit!
I highly recommend this, if you have an old pair - even a step out - this naturally gives a high degree of clarity.
Of course, you still need to keep your glasses nearby when you swap over, that's what the dual-drink-holder chairs are for right? :P

Plastic versus carbon fibre: kingkong quadcopter
The kingkong 260 quadcopter two-frame kit from Banggood - which includes two somewhat awkward but complete frames, 6" props, hardware and a mini (untested) PDB, all for A$38 - it's a pretty good deal, until it isn't.
The plastic is so brittle and offers near zero horizontal flex - where it matters in an arm-first crash - resulting in a fragile frame with very little absorption of shock without causing irreparable damage.
Unfortunately a buddy and I flew our numerous quads, which saw us get the 6" King Kong 260s out, which resulted in this:
Yup, 3 of the 4 arms on each quad are fine, just fine .. the others; not so much.
"iforce2d" did a review of the frames, see them in more detail on youtube

LS180 build, lots of photos
I wanted to build a top-performance 180mm as my others are 250/260's, and when I heard this clone on Banggood was pretty good, I ordered it along with other kit from nextfpv.com.au
I've seen build vids on youtube, but they often go for hours or miss key steps in the design/layout of cabling, something pretty important on 180mm or less builds, and even generally. So this is an attempt to add value back to the Intertubes.
Firstly the frame is good, it's pretty solid, but the top plate could be a little better or at least the front of the craft could be more solid.
The camera angle is good, but the locking mechanism isn't ideal, and I fully expect it to break and probably break the top plate with it.. The camera I had laying around spare was unfortunately wider than the side shields, so this is adds to the concern and weakness at the front.
Anyway, here's the final product:
Specs:
Of course running Betaflight with BLHeli 14.3 on the ESCs, managed via Cleanflight
Comparing the size of it to Fatshark Dom v2's:
The build:
Package arrives from nextfpv with the final parts needed for the Banggood frame:
Motors go on the frame
Put the PDB where it will go, and think about the design of your ESC wires and other cabling.
12V at the back for the VTX, LEDs cable will pass through, and the 5V to the FC will just be a little cross-over style cable i'll make later. Note this is the upward view, I flip it (see below)
I like to run the PDB upside down to what i've seen others do, I find you have the space and might as well use it, and it creates a place for airflow between the flight controller and the PDB, and last-minute wires can be put through there if need be
Here i'm basically laying out the ESC wires (which will be flipped along with the PDB), so I can lay them out nicely for a clean and lesser-cable/weight job.
Tin the PDB, when the wires are trimmed short it can get hard in the final stage to get clean solder joints:
Measure and then make a cable, soldering it to the PDB. Below image shows the PDB in the final position upside down:
Solder in your 5V and 12V cables. The 5V is a short link to the FC, and the 12V to the VTX
Now, solder in your ESCs. Note the VTX cable on the RHS.
Now lay it out and check lengths and alignment, make sure you're happy with it.
Be wary of any tricks with the frame, such as the side-walls on the camera (LHS in pick) which forced the ESC wires to be behind the stand-offs, although later I find the camera is to wide to have these in anyway.
Cut/trim and line up your motor wires, then tin them.
In this build on the rear two arms/motors I keep the motor wires a little longer and wrap them over, which you can see in the RHS of the pick, as I plan to reuse these.
The weight is negligible, and the air resistance similar given it won't be flying horizontally/flat.
Motor wires and ESCs soldered and done
Now I add the Naze32 FC. Notice the top-right of the Naze has two soldered holes. That's typically the RX 5v +/-, but I used it as the cross-over power from the PDB.
Reason is I did this on another build, and it keeps the full 8 power outputs usable. This is a PWM RX as it's all I had at the time
Below shows the PWM RX connected after soldering the pin headers to the Naze.
Black/white are the outputs to the ESCs. I would trim these wires in the next build, and in a racing situation solder directly avoiding the pin headers/extra cabling :>
And the general positioning of the RX once the top plate is screwed on
Now I measured out the VTX cable (I was going to get my minimosd-micro on, but ran out of time), and lightly cable-tied it to the right length. You see this in the next image with a red cable-tie.
Completed build as shown below
There's a few missing steps you say? Correct.. I was in a bit of a rush, so no good/usable pics in the end
But essentially -
I got the camera angle right, fed the RX wires through then screwed in the top plate.
The camera/top-plate holder isn't ideal, so that was key to get right before the VTX etc.
Steps from there, to what you see above:
Of course, flash your controller with Betaflight and sync the ESCs.
Then check your motor direction, I got 1/4 on this build, but I just loaded up the BLHeli software using the Cleanflight connector, and adjust the motor direction.
Props on and wire up your battery, time to go outside and get tuning!

Specs:
- LS 180 clone frame from Banggood
- Cobra cm2204-28 KV2300
- Naze32 (legit)
- Littlebee 20A ESCs
- Generic PDB - I would have preferred this one with low-voltage alarms and other goodness, but didn't have a spare one at the time
- Echine 110 FOV FPV Camera - not bad actually, better than my older Fatshark one from HobbyKing
- Echine 200mW VTX kit (not great VTX, but only >25mW I had spare)
- PWM RX (again, all I had laying around, may swap out some of this later)
Of course running Betaflight with BLHeli 14.3 on the ESCs, managed via Cleanflight
Final weight, with props, FPV, VTX antenna, 5cm RP-SMA extender (to avoid VTX damage), lens-cap (forgot), landing-gear (no rubber), and below batteries:
- 432gm running 3S 1300mAh Turnigy nano-tech/a-spec
- 471gm running 4S 1400mAh Multistar/Turnigy Racer
The build:
Package arrives from nextfpv with the final parts needed for the Banggood frame:
Motors go on the frame
Desolder the ESC wires going towards the motors, we'll cut the motor wires and solder those here
ESCs without the motor wires

The camera/top-plate holder isn't ideal, so that was key to get right before the VTX etc.
Steps from there, to what you see above:
- Cable-tie the RX
- Position the 5cm VTX antenna-extension. My reasoning for using these is I broke the SMA-connector/solder joint on a A$99 Immersion VTX, twice, because the antenna was directly-wired to the VTX. Given i'm still learning/pushing hard in gaps at full speed etc, this gives me some slack. Besides, the Echine VTX doesn't line up with the hole in this frame, and the antenna SMA joiner doesn't fit in the provided hole in the top-plate :/
- Cable-tie the VTX in place, being conscious of radio/FX interference/heat, and the 5cm joiner lining up neatly without damaging bends
- Cable-tie the 5cm joiner as close as possible to the antenna, to avoid the antenna flipping down one side in to the props. You can see this red tie above the top plate, helping stop the battery sliding back in to the antenna/xt60
- Place the xt60 connector in it's spot, you could cable-tie this but the battery should limit the risk of it landing in the props.
- Put the fattest/strongest cable-ties along the two sides of the RX wires, then heat-shrink the RX wires inside. I used two colours of heat-shrink, black on the bottom then clear, fwiw
- Cable-tie the ESCs down, I didn't have fat-enough heat-shrink to go around the motors and over the arms, i'll definitely clean this up in the future for aero-dynamic reasons as much as aesthetics
Of course, flash your controller with Betaflight and sync the ESCs.

Drone racing, launch control anyone?
Slightly more in the autonomous vein here --
Who will be the first to program launch-control into their TX?
Think about it - you're at the starting line, the countdown begins, people arm, you arm, you ready your finger on the launch control button.
"Go!"
You hit launch, boom, you're off!
You programmed it perfectly for your quad to apply optimal motor speed, angle and direction, to push ahead of everyone, without you touching the sticks, jumping the 15 meters forward and 2.5 meters up tailored for this course, perfect for the right hander you need to take in 5 meters time, enough time to take the sticks, boom, into the corner...
Beyond that is cheating, corner-assistance, maximum power out, recover from a crash?
Opportunities are endless, and the programming trivial.. #opentx

VTX FTW, what sport or activity is next?
I attended the Melbourne Multirotor Racing Club (MMRC) race through MultiGP on Sunday morning, and aside from it being well organised and generally awesome, it got me thinking
What is the next sport or spectator event to use VTX technology, where the spectators are connected to exactly what the player - in this case a pilot - is seeing?
Yeah it's been tried before, with the whole dual-screen thing, but this was different.
Being able to swap between the racers during the race, pick a favourite or the best flyer, see a crash live - was awesome.
Seeing their exact view, OSD etc etc, thinking what they were thinking when they saw traffic, the take off, the final corners...
Some examples below, this was captured with my Fatshark Dom V2 DVR, quality is better in the video

FPV race track design, some things come naturally (trees)
I was using Google maps looking at parks in my area, after a grumpy old man "trainer" of 15 year old track and field girls (nothing sus.. he was paranoid about me supposably filming him.. nothing to hide right..), had a pretty aggressive whinge at me one day (for flying 200m away - that's another story, on video..), and I came across Newport Lakes.
Big area, out of the way of kids, but always the risk of dog-walkers of course.
Anyway it turns out there's some pretty awesomely positioned trees, such that making a race track is pretty much done, and it's down to passer-by control and a good spotter.
Google maps view, nothing interesting:

Mobius action cam - 3D printed housing
I'm a fan of the Mobius action cam, whilst it's not as high quality as the GoPro, it's budget-conscious, and just more disposable..
You're more willing to throw it (or two) on something and do crazy things with $100 racing around, than $580 which is the GoPro Silver..
Anyway, after trying a few 3D printed chassis, this one was my favourite. Thingiverse had the first template, hats off to the designer, but the 3D printing guys I used touched it up and made the design more solid, filling in a few empty spaces.
I've broken two, but the camera lived as did its lens - very happy outcome for all.
It's only 10 degrees, but i've found it's enough given the width of the camera and the mounting adds more angle, but i'll probably adjust/increase this given my typical FPV camera angle is higher.. If someone else does this LMK.

Matek "5 in 1" PDB from Banggood
I was doing my first real build and snagged a few things from Banggood to do so.
The Matek "5 in 1" PDB caught my eye, standard PDB, 12v and 5v, BEC and LED controls, but also a lost-alarm and low-battery alarm with three config settings (3.6v 3.5v and 3.4v).
The more things in one you can get, the less 'moving parts' you have, therefore less (in theory) chance of failure.
Just a quick post, will definitely be using these again, wouldn't mind seeing OSD combined in for 6 in 1 with a VTX passthrough to inject that data into the stream.. V2 perhaps?
Soldered and seating in place, wiring underneath for cleanliness:
Side view, in completed/post-maiden state on the Banggood KingKong 260 frame (under $40 AUD for 2 frames!):
Current Banggood link to the Matek is [here]
$11 AUD at the time of this post

Bebop v1, some old flight data
The Parrot Bebop v1 is a pretty good device, compact and well built.
I highly recommend these as a basic RTF (ready to fly) platform for beginners, not those who want to race drones or build their own quadcopter, but for easy flying with good controls and camera control, it's the device of choice.
Yes the DJI supports various cameras, better distance in terms of flying (the Bebop controller and wifi just isn't reliable), but it's more complex for the older or younger folk who want to get in the air quickly and capture nice footage.
Anyway, sorting through the digital crates and came across this data capture:
Elevation 102m, reasonable ascent/descent speeds, default app-able settings, prior to tweaking the firmware.

The second image below is how many others were on the "flight academy", which, probably without many people realising, publishes all your flights, username and GPS data, and flight data. No images/videos are shared unless you say so, and you must choose to hide each session should you not want it here..
Apparently you can walk their API as well, if you say wanted to harvest all the Parrot flight academy data worldwide... not just for Bebops, but all their devices..
